About the Hanoi Opera House


"…one of the most prominent artworks in South East Asia", was how a prominent professor of Architecture described the Opera House.

Inspired by the Opera National De Paris, a challenge facing the original designers was how to create a lasting symbol of romance and beauty on a former lake. Using Vietnamese ingenuity, a bed of 30,000 bamboo stakes was planted and covered in concrete for the foundation.

And from its opening in 1911, the building has hosted local and international nobility, artists, leaders and heroes. Preparing for its second centenary, the building was renovated in the 1990’s, under the supervision of Vietnamese French architects
